The Three Golden Considerations for Buying Pet Insurance

Ready to purchase pet insurance?  If you’ve done some research, then you could be on your way – but don’t underestimate these three key areas that can make or break the policy.

Compatibility

How useful is a pet insurance policy that doesn’t work with your vet – or many vets?

Indeed, one of the more important issues at hand is whether the insurance policy will work with your chosen vet(s).  Extending beyond this area of purchasing pet insurance, one of the best ways to do some research on the policy and insurance company is to ask your vet.  You can do a few things here:

  • Call your vet: Do they accept the prospective insurance company?  Are they recommended?
  • Call a few vets: where you live, your parents/family are located, or anything that moves you.
  • Call emergency pet locations.  This is something that is easy to overlook, but you should certainly look into this important consideration.

Just like a credit card, you will need your pet insurance to work in a number of places.  You don’t want to lose coverage on a technicality such as location.  Be careful when approaching the network of covered vets, services, and specialists.

Reputation

When you compare pet insurance companies, as well as other types of insurers, reputation plays a prominent role.  You do not want to get stuck with a company that is not pleasant to do business with, is not good at providing coverage, and so forth.

As you might be guessing, this is where asking around comes into play once again.  Your vet will likely have had experience with different pet insurance companies.  Asking your vet and closest emergency location can be a great start.

You would also do well to do some research online.  You should have few problems finding opinions, both good and bad, on pet insurance companies.  While no insurance company’s reputation is without fault (justified or not), you will be able to discern the general consensus or trend.

Safeguard yourself against the stereotypical insurance company that is slow and doesn’t pay.  It may or may not become a reality…

The Policy Itself

If you’ve found a great company that is compatible and reliable, you’re off to a great start.  Don’t go for the average policy for the type of animal you have – you must make sure that the policy will take care of your needs (well, your animal’s needs as well).

Discovering the best pet insurance plan can make an incredible difference.  Learning that routine or specialised lab work isn’t covered on a comprehensive pet insurance plan is not acceptable.  Some of the limitations and exclusions can also undermine the coverage that you believe you have.

Learn about the policy and keep the characteristics clear for purposes of comparison.  Approaching deductibles as well as complicated issues of specific details will serve you well.  You can get exactly what you need and ensure that your pet’s medical needs won’t break your budget.
